Bear Rescue Center

We went to the Bear Rescue Center that is right next to our cabins within the national park. This center rescues bears (and some other animals) that have all been involved in the illegal wildlife trading in Vietnam.

The bears will never be able to make it on their own again in the wild... but at least they're safe here and their lives should be a lot better than what they used to be. There is a superstitious belief in Vietnam that a bear's stomach bile can help heal wounds and has magical healing powers... it's a really sad, painful thing for the bears though.   :(

The sun bear enclosure...

One of our school's security guards making buddies with a sun bear...

This bear is new to the rescue center and has to be slowly introduced to the other bears.
He gets free time in the open enclosure (oxy moron?) for part of the day, while the other bears are put into the cages... and hopefully soon he will be able to get along with the other bears.

It looks like he just wants to get out there and make friends!...

Dude... those claws...
