traditional house in Hoi An

While walking through town one evening, Elizabeth and I were invited into a traditional home by this little old man...

[Gotta love the framed photo of Ho Chi Minh.]

His family has lived in this house for SIX generations! Usually you would have to buy a ticket to go into a house like this but we each gave the man 20,000 dong and he gave us a tour... pretty cool.

There are three beams above the photos of this man's grandfather and father... each represents something... (I forgot the bottom two... but) the top one is for heaven.

This is an open area in the middle of the house (open to the sky...). There are markings along the door, to show how high the water reaches each year (a couple years, the water level was at least 4 or 5 feet high!).

The man let us walk around on our own (it was awkward but awesome) and we found his two daughters  making snacks that they'll later sell on the street...

And the mom was cooking them back in the kitchen...

Elizabeth and our tour guide... so cute!
